Welcome back on Blogger!
Unreleased demos from 1997 have surfaced on the Internet! While not providing any download link (obviously), I want to talk about them with you.
Let's jump into them!

You'll Stay: This was such a nice surprise. I'm reading it's a re-worked version of Like a Flower, another beautiful demo. You'll Stay was produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard. It's an atmospheric and melancholic ballad enriched by a latin guitar, a drum and Madonna's soulful vocals. The lyrics talk about a past love Madonna will never forget (or a dead person, maybe her mother): "There's a hole in my heart / no one can take your place / why would I want them to? /There's a feeling I had that no one can replace / time cannot erase". And then the chorus: "In my heart you'll never go away / you'll stay, you'll stay, you'll stay/ In my soul you'll never go away / you'll stay, you'll stay, you'll stay". As you can see, this demo and Like a Flower are highly similar lyrically, even sharing some verses.
This song is easily my favorite of the bunch.

I'll Be Gone: Another great surprise, I'll Be Gone is a mid-tempo r&b track and it features Babyface as a backing vocalist. This song wouldn't have sounded out of place on Bedtime Stories so I can see why Madonna, who doesn't like to repeat herself, scrapped it. Madonna's voice sounds as soulful as ever (reminiscent of I'd Rather Be Your Lover a bit). The lyrics are very straightforward, Madonna sings about a lover who doesn't give her enough attention: "You told me you love me but we're not even friends / this thing can't go on, this has to end / My biggest mistake is that I gave you too much / love can never work without trust".

Never Love a Stranger: A long-awaited demo, Never Love a Stranger is a slow r&b ballad and it features Babyface as a backing vocalist. I'm going to be honest, this sounds like a new (and lesser) version of the marvelous Take a Bow so, once again, I understand why Madonna decided to scrap it. Her vocal performance on this is "good" but not spectacular. In my opinion her voice is trembling too much at times and she sounds out of breath. Lyrically, the song is about love at first sight and how it can "blind" people, mistaking a one night stand for true love: "Love at first sight only makes you blind / first you lose your senses / then you drop your self-defenses in time". Then the chorus: "Never love a stranger / never put your heart in danger / never fall in love with someone you don't know / love takes time to grow / love takes time".
A nice addition to Madonna's catalog, though not necessarily my favorite.

In conclusion...

As great as these demos are, I'm glad Madonna totally scrapped not only this material but this direction in general. Had she proceeded with this sound and lyrics, Ray of Light would have been a lesser version of Bedtime Stories.
Still, it's interesting to see the birth and growth of an album, from r&b to electronica and from simple lyrics about love to actual introspective and deep themes.

Music, movies, books to revisit during quarantine (Madonna Edition).

(Photo by Richard Corman, 1983) Welcome back on Blogger fans!  It's been a while since my last article and things have sadly changed since then. Covid-19 has impacted our lives deeply and I hope all of you are okay.  Since we have to stay at home, what better way to spend our time with our favorite Diva?  Here is a list of Madonna-related stuff that I think we should all revisit. Let's get into this article!  Madonna: Like an Icon  Originally published in 2007 by music critic Lucy O'Brien, this book is always a nice read as it not only chronicles the life and career of Madonna but also tells about O'Brien's experience as a fan, what she thought of Madonna initially and what made her change her mind for the best.  This book keeps on getting updated as Madonna's life and career progresses and a new edition is apparently coming this year. I highly recommend it. Bedtime Stories   One of Madonna's most underrated and over

Madonna and Old Hollywood: her finest inspiration.

(Madonna photographed by Steven Meisel, 1991) Welcome back on Blogger! Today I want to talk about one of Madonna's biggest inspirations: old Hollywood. I have always loved classic stars and movies myself so I am very happy to share this article with you. Let's get into it! (Madonna on the set of the Material Girl  music video) Madonna has often expressed admiration for legendary pop figures, not only actors and actresses but also films, with specific attention to the characters and their main trait, may it be wit, melancholia, romance, sensuality or ambiguity. Their style, beauty and overall uniqueness have been honored by Madonna through her music videos, performances and outfits. In particular, our Diva is great at giving new life to them, she is able to re-invent them in a new context, thus making them timeless. Marilyn Monroe is probably Madonna's biggest inspiration, aesthetically speaking. She has paid tribute to the blonde bombs

Like a Prayer (1989) - Album Review

Welcome back on Blogger! The day has finally arrived.  Today we are going to discuss Madonna's fourth studio album Like a Prayer, universally recognized as one of the best albums of its decade and of all time.  Let's delve into this masterpiece together!  Released on March 21, 1989, Like a Prayer sees Madonna at her most intimate and confessional, dealing with domestic violence, her mother's death, her complicated relationship with her father, the importance of family and female empowerment, all connected by an apparently shadowy but omnipresent leitmotiv: her Catholic upbringing .  " The theme of Catholicism runs rampant. It's me struggling with the mystery and magic that surrounds it. My own Catholicism is in constant upheaval  [...] Because in Catholicism you are a born sinner and you're a sinner all your life. No matter how you try to get away from it, the sin is within you all the time. It was this fear that haunted me; it taunted and pained me ever
