"Medellin" - Single/Video Review.

(Madonna in the video for "Medellin")

Welcome back on Blogger!
The day has finally arrived and Madonna's new era has officially begun! Let's discuss Medellin together....

The song: Unexpected. That's how I would describe this new single. The electronic/reggaeton production sounds fresh, chill, smooth. It vibes.
The song sounds like it's made of water, as strange as that may sound. The lyrics are also quite good and interesting, as Madonna goes back in time, when she was seventeen years old. She starts a new life, the life that never was, a Madonna that never was but could have been, in the city of Medellin, in Colombia. Here, she meets a guy (Maluma) and eventually falls in love with him. Her voice reminds me a lot of her "Ray of Light" days, during the bridge in particular.

The video: So much happening in this video! It sure is part of a larger visual project, as it seems to be the first chapter of a very specific story. The video starts with Madonna dressed as a nun, praying in a chapel: "Dear God, how could I trust anyone afters years of disappointment and betrayal? How could I not want to run away? Again and again....escape....I will never be what society expects me to be. I've seen to much, I cannot turn back. I have been kidnapped, tortured, humiliated and abused. In the end I still have hope, I still believe in the goodness of humans. Thank God for nature, for the angels that surround me, for the spirit of my mother, who is always protecting me. From now on, I'm Madame X....and Madame X loves to dance....because you can't hit a moving target".
After this, what I think is a flashback starts. We see Madame X as a cha cha instructor and during one of her classes, she falls in love with an apprentice. We see them flirting, dancing, partying and at last, getting married. However, in this flashback, a new flashback appears. Madame X is running at night, in the woods....she's alone and scared. Maybe her husband has been killed and she's escaping the killer? Who knows.
The cinematography is amazing, the colors, the outfits, the beautiful last scene where Madame X and her husband are riding their horses in the woods at sunrise, after their wedding party.
My only complaint is about the wedding party scene itself....I don't know, it is kind of "trashy"....but maybe it's intentional? It's the only part of the video I don't really care for.

(Madonna and Maluma)

In conclusion....

Both the song and the video are good, let's get this straight. Our Diva is finally back and I couldn't be happier.
Still, I'm not blown away. There's a little too much Maluma on the song and the video could be one of her absolute best if it wasn't for the wedding party scene. I like them both but I don't "love" them like I loved Living for Love, speaking about recent lead singles.
I'm glad that Madonna is still doing her thing though. Still trying new things, looking for new inspirations, soundscapes and storylines. I also love how she oozes positivity this era....that's why I'm disappointed with myself for not being 100% on board so far.
Again, the "Madame X" project is going to be big and I'm sure I'll end up loving most of it. I'll patiently wait for the upcoming singles/videos and hopefully I'll soon be warming up to Medellin.

Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual (1983) - Album Review

( The official album cover, photographed by Annie Leibovitz) Welcome back on Blogger!  What if we take a step back? The year is 1984 and two women, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, are ruling the Billboard charts with their respective debut eras. They both showcase a Street/Post-Punk look, they both have a high-pitched singing voice and their songs are just as famous as their outfits.  The press immediately tries to create a rivalry between them, critics praise Lauper and dismiss Madonna, the public appreciates both.  Who is better? Who will stand the test of time? Who will fade into oblivion? Back to present day. Thirty-six years later, both women are respected legends and highly busy philanthropists who still release albums, sell out concert tours and win awards.  This review marks the start of a series dedicated to Madonna's peers  and what better way to start it than to review the iconic  She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper, Ma...
